The World Wide Web Turns 15
Although the exact date can be disputed, August 6th is one of the days that can be seen as the birthday of the World Wide Web. The BBC is marking it as such, and providing a flash timeline of the world wide web. Some of the highlights include:
— Aug 6th 1991 when Tim Berners-Lee first released web software
— April 22nd, 1993 when the Mosaic browser was released for Windows
— June 1993 when HTML (used to create web pages) was first released
— Aug. 1995 when there were 18,957 websites online
— Aug 1996 when there were 342,081 websites online
— Aug 2000 when nearly 20 million web sites are online
— Aug 2006 with 92,615,362 websites (and counting) online
