Melting Polar Ice Caps and the Northwest Passage

So, what is the impact of global warming on the polar ice caps? According to the NPR's story, "Warming Eases Northwest Passage, Author Says," it might just open up the fabled Northwest Passage. From the piece:

European explorers spent centuries searching for a passage through the ice at the top of the world. The Northwest Passage, a shortcut to Asia, proved elusive until about 100 years ago, when Norway's Roald Amundsen completed a three-year journey.
