Today in History: Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tales
Today is the 170th anniversary of the publication of Hans Christian Anderson's first book of fairy tales. In addition, the year 2005 is also the bicentenial of his birth (April 2, 1805). To celebrate The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) is hosting a bicentenial celebration that includes audio clips of Anderson's fairy tales being read as well as video clips of things like Anderson's paper cuttings and the "Shakespeare Experts for Truth!" (which is pretty funny).
A few of his fairy tales include The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea (also known as The Real Princess), and Thumbelina.
For more information about Hans Christian Anderson, you can visit the HCA2005 Foundation or visit Wikipedia's Hans Christian Anderson page. And if you are interested in reading more of his work, most of the English translations by H. P. Paull are available and many of the same are available via a site for Aesop's Fables.
